Studebaker Car Dealership

Studebaker, a major American automobile manufacturer, used this location as one of its showrooms and service centers, contributing to the economic activity and automotive culture of the time.

Central Union Mission
Established in 1884, The Central Union Mission was one of the oldest private social service agencies in Washington, DC. It operated for many years, providing critical services to the homeless and low-income individuals and families. At this location, the Mission offered emergency shelter, food, clothing, medical care, job training, and spiritual support. The Mission's programs were comprehensive, aiming for long-term transformation and rehabilitation of individuals facing homelessness and addiction. In recent years, Central Union Mission moved its primary operations to 65 Massachusetts Avenue NW, but its legacy at the R Street location remains significant in the community's history.
